Basic Lunar Surface Checklist

Basic Lunar Surface Checklist. Houston: Manned Spacecraft Center, 1971.

One of NASA’s many manuals for the astronauts on the Apollo 16 mission to the Moon, this checklist guides the user through the many steps necessary to set foot onto the lunar surface.  Recounted in laborious detail are instrument operations, how to suit up, what to do in an emergency, and even when and what to eat.  The chief mission of Apollo 16 was to explore the lunar highlands and collect samples to determine the area’s geological composition.  In total, astronauts John W. Young and Charles M. Duke spent 71 hours on the surface of the Moon.
