Ernst Hiemer

Ernst Hiemer. Der Giftpilz. Nürnberg: Verlag Der Stürmer, 1938.

Translated from German as The Poisonous Mushroom, this collection of short stories is a piece of Nazi propaganda intended to instill a hatred and fear of Jews in young Germans.  The author instructs readers that “just as one must be careful to distinguish poisonous mushrooms from harmless fungi, so must one learn to spot Jews, who may be masquerading as honest citizens.”  Containing such titles as “How Jewish Traders Cheat” and “How Jews Torment Animals,” the collection closes with the call, “Free yourselves from the Jewish hand and save both folk and Fatherland!”
